Glenmorangie Whiskey: A Journey to the Heart of the Highlands
Glenmorangie is a single malt Scotch whiskey that has been in the business for over 100 years. The distillery was founded in 1843 by William Matheson, and it’s still owned and run by his family. Glenmorangie is one of the few distilleries that still uses floor-malted barley in its production process, which makes for an incredibly smooth taste (and great mouthfeel). The result is one of the most popular single malts on the market today, so let’s take a look at what all those people are drinking!
Glenmorangie Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Glenmorangie Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a single malt whiskey that was first produced in 1843. The distillery uses water from the Tarlogie Spring, which flows into the River Tain and out to sea.
The Glenmorangie Distillery has been making whisky for over 150 years, but the story of how it all began starts much earlier than that. In 1619, King James VI granted Sir Walter Scott a charter giving him ownership over lands in eastern Scotland. Scott built his home at Abbotsford House near Melrose Abbey–and eventually planted some barley seeds next door!
In 1838 Colonel Morrison bought Abbotsford House from Sir Walter Scott’s grandson (also named Walter) and converted part of its land into an estate called “Morrisonfield.” He also built several structures on site including stables and a distillery house–but it wasn’t until 1843 when William Matheson took over operations here that whisky production really began!
