Hydroponic buckets review
Hydroponic buckets may sound like a strange concept, but it means growing plants with their roots submerged in water. DWC buckets are a great way to get started with hydroponics. It is easy to set up and maintain and can be used for a wide variety of plants.
Plants are placed in a non-soil growing medium (such as clay pebbles) that promotes the growth of a balanced root structure. Nutrient-infused water circulates through the system, providing plenty of oxygen.
But before starting hydroponics, you need to choose the right system. Here are our suggestions.
If you're looking for the best 5 gallon bucket system at a fair price, this one from PowerGrow Systems is for you. It comes with almost everything you need to get started. There are four 5-gallon buckets, each with an air tube to connect to the pump. Also included is an air stone to properly vent the buckets. Each has a basket to hold the medium, and all buckets have waterproof seals.
This kit works pretty well and has some nice features. One is a water level indicator, allowing you to refill water and nutrients as needed. The pump that comes with the kit is a bit small at 6.5W, so you may want to upgrade to a larger pump for more efficient aeration.
While it is technically possible to use a pump of this size, many users have had to upgrade their pumps to get adequate circulation. Additionally, the tube is somewhat stiff. This isn't necessarily a big deal, but it can make it harder to connect to your system. We still recommend this product.
The DWC hydroponic bucket system is a great way to ensure that your plants receive enough oxygen and nutrients, and this high quality one from Artisun Technology is an excellent choice comes with a reservoir bucket. Having one of these is recommended so that your plants get as much nutrient-rich water as they need. The system also comes with four 5-gallon buckets (and reservoirs), efficient pumps, baskets, and tubing. It also contains clay pebbles and is an excellent growing medium.
This is a good performing system with the added benefit of being easy to maintain. Each growth bucket is replenished by a reservoir as plants consume water. This eliminates the need to refill each bucket individually. The pump also has ample capacity for this size, so you don't have to worry about the pump getting stuck.
I don't have many reservations about this. It's reasonably priced and has almost everything you need. However, kit sizes are available for reservation. Due to the additional reservoir bucket, the setup takes up a fair amount of space on the floor. We like the reservoir bucket idea and recommend it.
These buckets do not constitute a complete hydroponic setup – they still require pumps. These buckets are intended for use in drip irrigation systems suspended above plants. The bottom of the bucket connects to a drain line that returns excess water to the reservoir. Depending on the type of plants you grow, either a dripper system like this or a DWC may be best for you.
In summary, hydroponics is a rewarding hobby. You can grow your own perishables at home, often with minimal maintenance costs for your system. Best of all, deep water aquaculture systems tend to be inexpensive and fairly easy to set up.
