Measurement methodologies

Download and upload speeds

Measurement protocolHTTP/1.1
TCP or UDP port usedTCP port 443
Number of connections used simultaneously during the speed testStarts with 3 connections, then adds additional one after each 90 Mbps step
Length of each test (provided the volume threshold has not been reached)12 seconds each download and upload
Maximum volume of data exchangedNo limit
Speed test stream encryptionYes
Information on whether or not slow start has been removedYes, first 2 seconds of samples removed
Version of the Internet Protocol (IP) and selection method usedIpv4 only
Explanations of the displayed indicatorsResults are sampled with 100ms frequency, after the test completion average speed is calculated from the samples as well as from the raw measurements. The higher value of both average calculations is reported as a final result.

Latency

Measurement protocolHTTP/1.1
TCP or UDP port usedTCP port 443
Number of latency unit tests(if overall time-out has not expired)10
Number of bytes typically exchanged for each latency unit test167 bytes
Length of the time-out in seconds, for each latency unit test500 ms
Length of the time-out in seconds, for all latency test5000 ms
Latency test stream encryptionYes
Version of the Internet Protocol (IP) and selection method usedIpv4 only
Explanations of the displayed indicatorsThe result is a median value of the 10 unit latency tests

Test servers

Method for selecting the default test serverLatency tests are performed to 3 pre-selected server candidates for a given country. The server with lowest median latency is picked for the rest of the tests. In France we default to Cloudflare CDN only

  1. When a test server is hosted in a CDN, this test server’s capacity should not be listed.
